Apologies to Afghanistan
Political debate in the Netherlands an embarrassment

In recent weeks the Dutch government and parliament debated the Dutch military presence in Afghanistan. It became an undignified and embarrassing chain of events. Last night the government collapsed as a consequence. What annoyed me is that neither the people of Afghanistan nor the Dutch soldiers there were even mentioned in the past days.
I have the impression that the Dutch presence in Uruzgan is fruitful. Of course it is not an easy mission. Uruzgan is a large area, almost the size of the Netherlands. Not easy to safeguard that with just 2,000 personnel. And the Taliban are offering fierce resistance.
But still, progress has been made.
Afghanistan is now a more peaceful and safer place than it was 5 years ago. 21 young Dutch soldiers died, but they did not die for nothing.
It is embarrassing that the Dutch political debate was about the ego's of the prime minister and the deputy prime minister. Perhaps it was also about some small political gains in the local elections that we will have in ten days.
The debate was not about peace and prosperity in Afghanistan, or how the Netherlands could and should make a contribution to that. And for that we owe the people of Afghanistan an apology.
